Before we start, let’s review what we hope you will get through this subject. Then we can start to piece it together for you. For now we’ll talk a little bit regarding deer repellent that is the essential subject for readers and for the others.
Deer are some of the most graceful and amazing animals we have in North America. At first it’s fun to see them in your yard. You think one small animal can’t do too much damage to our plants. Then you wake up two days later to scraped trees, trampled flower beds and a bare garden. You shake your head and ask “what happened?”
Our gardens are very appealing to deer. They love to eat our flowers, trees and plants. As our cities expand into the wilderness land around us, our neighborhoods overlap with the deer’s feeding grounds. Since there is less forage grounds they will creep into our residential areas looking for food. Guess what they find; gardens that look to them like a buffet style salad bar.
1. Build a Deer Fence:
There are a few different ways you can keep deer out of your yard or garden. One way is building a big fence. Deer can jump an eight foot fence but they have to be scared pretty bad to do it. So an eight foot fence will do in most areas (remember that snow can build up making your eight foot fence into a 3 foot fence). Fences are not only expensive and labor intensive but they also block your view. Another option is to make little fences around the plants you want to protect. This seems silly to me, if you want to block off each plant then just let the deer eat them. Either way you can’t enjoy them.
2. Be Loud:
You can try to scare the deer away. Deer are usually frightened by loud noises. The problem is that deer can get used to loud noises very quickly. Your neighbors however will never get used to you banging pots and pans together. Once a deer decides you are just a crazy, loud person and not a threat they will ignore you.
3. Plant Deer Resistant Plants:
You can plan ahead and choose deer resistant plants. Notice that the word used was “resistant”? A hungry deer will make short work of the “deer proof” plant that you bought at the nursery. These will work if your neighbors have more tasty plants, but the second the deer get hungry your plants will be next on the menu.
Some people turn to home remedies. Some of these include hanging a bar of soap from your trees or a bag of human hair. These remedies look pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Some people say human urine will keep them away. Somehow I think peeing in the garden twice a week won’t be appreciated at the dinner table or by your neighbors.
4. Deer Repellent for Plants:
The best way to deter the deer is to use a commercial deer repellent. There are two different kinds of commercial deer repellent. There are area repellents which protect an area and contact repellents which protect whatever you spray them on. Area repellents work because of their foul, nasty odor. They try to make it uncomfortable for the deer’s sensitive sense of smell. Contact repellents work with the deer’s sense of taste. It is a very bitter flavor (yes I tasted it) that makes the plant you sprayed it in inedible for the deer. Most commercial deer repellents last for months and won’t be washed away by the rain. They are also safe for you plants and your curious kids.
If you could take the main ideas from this article and put them into a list, you would a great overview of what we have learned about deer repellent or deer repellent recipe.
